| About this publication |
| The LexisNexis Butterworths Legal Citator (BLC) is an on-line (Internet) service that gives you a clear advantage when conducting research on the precedential value of reported judgments.
|
| What does the BLC do? |
- Examines the way in which reported judgments treat each other as precedent based on the principle of stare decisis.
- Examines how judgments which have cited others are, themselves, regarded. The BLC "drills-down" and examines three levels of cross- referring judgments, allowing you to check on the standing of those judgments which have cited the judgment you are researching.
- Examines the history of reported judgments which have gone on appeal or review.
- Allows you to search for information in a creative and flexible way by using five intuitive search templates.
- Allows you to continue to access all the information to be found in LexisNexis Butterworths standard law report indexes.
- Displays the results of its precedent search using both symbols and text.
- In addition, the BLC allows the user to access relevant primary legal sources (such as law reports) to which the user has subscribed and which are contained within the LexisNexis Butterworths Online Publications web site.
|
| What the BLC covers |
|
Currently, the BLC encompasses judgments reported in the following law report series and between the following dates:
South African Law Reports - 1947 to current volume
All South African Law Reports - 1996 to current volume
LexisNexis Butterworths Constitutional Law Reports - 1994 to current volume
LexisNexis Butterworths Labour Law Reports - July 1994 to current volume
Whenever a parallel citation exists to a chosen Judgment ('parallel citation' meaning that the same chosen judgment has been published in another law report series) then the following law report series will be reflected: Judgments Online; Industrial Law Journal; South African Criminal Law Reports; South African Labour Law Reports.
All cases cited by a South African court and published in the series of law reports listed above are processed by the BLC system; this includes cited cases published prior to 1947 as well as any judgment of a foreign court used as an authority.
The BLC is updated as soon as the published volumes of law reports become available.
|
How will the BLC benefit you? |
- Guarantees results - by providing several methods of searching the database. If the information is there you’ll find it!
- Saves you time - allows you to view three generations of related judgments and all other case information at once; so why work three times as hard?
- Provides rapid case analysis - unique and dynamic signals give an indication of the precedential standing of any reported case. Spot weaknesses in your opponent's case!
- Allows for personalised research - use the Personal Folder system to save the cases you use most often; the BLC will update them automatically for you!
